How Many Headlines Before We Get Answers? Answer us Clara Anriola, Mariluz Garcia, and Alexis Hill.

Jessica’s at the Washoe County Sheriffs Department … Sheriff Darin Balaam might need to create a wing for Karma Box Project employees.

Phil Tenneon you are a marvel breaking another Karma Box employee arrest.

Everyone needs to thank Phil for calling out Washoe County Government.

That’s right, another arrest connected to the Karma Box Project has surfaced — and once again, the focus shifts back to oversight at the Nevada Cares Campus.

When organizations serve vulnerable populations — individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health crises — the standard for accountability should be exceptionally high. Not average. Not reactive. High.

So the question isn’t rumor. The question is governance.

What safeguards are in place at the campus?
How are contractors vetted?
What financial controls exist to protect clients and public funds?
How quickly are incidents reported to county leadership?
What independent audits have been completed?

The Washoe County Board of Commissioners ultimately oversees county management and taxpayer-funded programs. That includes ensuring transparency at facilities like the Cares Campus.

Some commissioners have publicly called for stronger oversight measures and independent reviews. Others have focused on program expansion and service delivery. Both matter — but oversight and compassion are not mutually exclusive.

Voters deserve clarity on where each commissioner stands:

  • Do they support regular independent audits?

  • Do they believe current reporting structures are sufficient?

  • What changes, if any, have been implemented after past controversies?

This isn’t about personalities. It’s about systems.

Public trust erodes when the perception grows that incidents repeat without structural reform. It strengthens when leaders proactively explain safeguards, release findings, and demonstrate corrective action. And believe us Commissioners Clara Andriola, Alexis Hill, and Candidate/Commissioner Mariluz Garcia haven’t been asking for accountability. The only commissioner asking questions of County Manager Kate Thomas has been Candidate/Commissioner Mike Clark, but he’s been questioning Grant Denton and Karma Box since 2023.

Washoe County residents fund these programs. The people being served depend on them. That means transparency isn’t optional — it’s foundational.

At some point, the question becomes simple:

What has changed?

And if the answer isn’t clear, voters will ask it again.
