Shooting Incident on 6th Street Sparks Concern About Karma Box Project

So here is what Washoe County is saying about yesterdays incident … you note they didn’t lead with Karma Box. We would have.

We’re genuinely curious.

Why does Washoe County, Nevada - Government go radio silent every time questions surface about leadership at the Karma Box Project?

No press conference.
No independent review.
No “we take this seriously and are looking into it.”

Just crickets.

To be clear — this isn’t about the Safe Camp. It isn’t about whether services should exist. It isn’t about whether people deserve help.

It’s about accountability.

When concerns are raised about individuals running organizations connected to public partnerships and taxpayer dollars, the appropriate response isn’t protection-by-avoidance. It’s transparency.

Instead, Washoe County seems to perfect the art of the shoulder shrug.

Maybe there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation. If so, share it.
Maybe everything checks out. If so, say it.
Maybe an independent review would clear the air. If so, do it.

But the longer the silence stretches, the louder it gets.

We’re not asking for drama.
We’re asking for daylight.

Come on, Washoe County — fess up. Or at least explain why you won’t.

And while we’re asking questions, let’s talk about public records.

Vacated?

Mathew Grimlsleu appears to have resolved matters in Second Judicial District Court — that’s a matter of record.

Now the question becomes: what role, if any, does he have with the Karma Box Project, and were organizational funds used to secure legal counsel?

If Karma Box hired an attorney on behalf of an employee or associate, the public deserves clarity about the source of those funds. If the organization receives public support, contracts, or taxpayer-connected dollars, transparency isn’t optional — it’s required.

No one is presuming guilt. Court outcomes are court outcomes.
But when individuals connected to publicly partnered nonprofits face legal matters — especially involving serious charges — taxpayers have a right to know:

  • Was public money involved in legal defense costs?

  • What is the organization’s policy on this?

  • What oversight does Washoe County, Nevada - Government exercise over its nonprofit partners?

These are governance questions, not personal attacks.

If everything was handled appropriately, say so.
If policies were followed, show them.
If public dollars were not involved, clarify that immediately.

Silence only fuels speculation.
