Accountability Isn’t a Faction — It’s a Standard

Let’s rewind.

The Washoe County Republican Central Committee once passed a resolution refusing to support then–Sparks Councilmember Kristopher Dahir. They wouldn’t endorse him. Wouldn’t allow party materials at headquarters. Wouldn’t let him participate in events.

It didn’t remove him from office.
It didn’t change his voter registration.
It didn’t affect a single council vote.

What it did do was spotlight internal party warfare which continues …

Fast forward to today.

For Martinez and Reese Accountability Stops at the Curb

Today’s Reno City Council meeting should be lively. Vice Mayor Miguel Martinez and Reno’s mayor-in-waiting (at least in his own campaign emails) Devon Reese will be perched on the dais, no doubt refreshed after Reese’s fabulous fundraiser at the Grand Sierra Resort — you know, the same Grand Sierra that benefited from all that generous Tax Increment Financing (TIF) support Reese voted to approve. Pure coincidence, we’re sure.

Meanwhile, local Republicans were busy firing off memes about an alleged DUI involving Sparks Councilmember Joe Rodriguez over the weekend.

But here’s the multi-million-dollar question no one seems to be asking:

Whiskey, Wingmen, and the Elephant in the Council Chambers

If timing is everything, then today’s Sparks City Council meeting may feel like the Sparks city manager’s worst nightmare.

Because hanging over the dais is not just an agenda — it’s a question no one seems eager to ask out loud.

On Friday night, Sparks City Councilmember Joe Rodriguez was reportedly at the Reno Events Center attending the PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour. Also in attendance? Reno mayoral candidate and councilmember Devon Reese and Reno Vice Mayor Miguel Martinez.

Pendleton Whisky. Velocity Tour. Whiskey.

WC-1: The Zombie Tax That Keeps Eating Washoe County Residents Wallets

Remember 2016? When Washoe County voters were told schools were literally crumbling around our children and the only thing standing between students and structural collapse was a sales tax hike wrapped in a shiny PR campaign called “Save Our Schools.”

What voters weren’t told:
– Enrollment was already projected to decline.
– Developers didn’t want “per door” fees like other cities use to fund infrastructure.
– And the PR machine running WC-1 was also building a very cozy political ecosystem that now shapes the WCSD board and beyond.

A Tale of Two Councilmen: One Handles Ethics, the Other Handles Egos

Well, what do you know — Sparks City Councilmember Joe Rodriguez wrapped up his ethics saga this week without a meltdown, a tirade, or a televised tantrum.

The Nevada Commission on Ethics approved a deferral and dismissal deal in the case against Rodriguez — the one where he was accused of using a few photos in uniform during his 2022 campaign for school board. After the usual legal rollercoaster (complaint, violation, fine, appeal, and settlement), the final decision reads nice and clean:

“Rodriguez has not committed any violation of the Ethics Law.”

The Touch That Means Nothing

Oh, the great fire study fix …

Did anyone actually take the time to watch the Regional Fire Services Study Board make its debut on September 4 at 10 a.m.? Probably not. But for those who did, it was a show worth critiquing.

The board is stacked with two reps each from the City of Sparks, City of Reno, and Washoe County. Logical enough. But what’s not logical is who didn’t make the cut: Commissioners Mike Clark and Jeanne Herman — the only two commissioners with firsthand wildfire scars in their districts. Instead, we got Clara Andriola and Mariluz Garcia. Why? Don’t ask — just “call it good to go.”

Mob Control Needed at Washoe County Commission Meeting

In a dizzying twist of local political irony, Washoe County Library Trustee Marie Rodriguez — once a recipient of Commissioner Mike Clark’s support — appears to be smearing him as the secret ringleader of a so-called “mob” that attends commission meetings for about a year now.

In a public email to Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam, Rodriguez paints a scene fit for a made-for-TV thriller: she claims that emotionally charged public commenters, whom she labels as followers of political figure Robert Beadles, descend on county meetings and — get this — are silenced only when Commissioner Clark allegedly gives a “gesture.”

Political Courage: When an Elected Official Speaks from the Heart

In an era when most politicians carefully sidestep controversial issues, Sparks City Council Member Joe Rodriguez (Ward 5) demonstrated rare courage by taking a clear stance on Trump's immigration orders through a heartfelt Facebook post.

This isn't about whether you agree or disagree with Rodriguez's position. It's about something far more fundamental: an elected official willing to stand up and be counted, to put their beliefs in writing, and to defend them openly. In today's political climate, such authenticity is as precious as it is rare.

While scrolling through other council members' social media feeds reveals the usual parade of handshakes and ceremonial appearances, Rodriguez chose to address an issue that deeply affects real families in his ward. While others post about ribbon cuttings, he's engaging with the human cost of policy decisions—families facing possible separation, fearful children, communities grappling with uncertainty.

No Services Roadmap: Sparks Agenda

With the City of Sparks budget deficit, it seems “the powers that be” are hoping to avert layoffs due to lack of funds. The Sparks City Council on Monday will vote on Agenda Item 9.2 to establish a Voluntary Employee Separation Program not to exceed $2,200,000 from the general fund and $1,000,000 from all other funds, thus proving the City of Sparks is “Wishin’ and Hopin” that they have a whole bunch of interested employees saying goodbye.

But what about all that institutional knowledge that will be exciting the front door? Will Sparks become Washoe County Government who’s crack team can’t get a senior a hot meal?
