TBD - The Relevance of the Southwest Washoe County’s Homeowner Association’s Community Communication & Collaboration
Email that was forwarded to us regarding Washoe County’s opinion of the Fire Disaster Summit on Friday, May 9, 2025.
Today at the Club at Arrowcreek there is a gathering put together by a lobbyist and Homeowners' Associations from some of Reno's most exclusive enclaves for what they've billed as a "Fire Disaster Summit" – though "Fundraising Expedition" might be more accurate.
As we posted, Washoe County Government, doesn’t see a value to this meeting. Why have it then?
Is the ultimate plan of this meeting to have representatives from communities where homes regularly sell for seven figures attempt to earnestly explain why federal, state, and county taxpayers should foot the bill for their evacuation plans and disaster preparedness. The irony of this request taking place amid the manicured fairways and gourmet dining of a private country club seems lost on organizers. They need working-class families from across Nevada to chip in.
Is the point of this summit to secure public funding for disaster planning and evacuation routes for communities that specifically chose to build in high-risk wildland-urban interface zones – a decision that came with well-documented fire risks. They maintain private security, golf courses, and clubhouses, but somehow evacuation planning is where they draw the line on self-funding?
We’re fairly certain the Southwest Washoe County’s Homeowner Association’s Community Communication & Collaboration Meeting today knows Brown will not be attending. So why is this group still indicating that Brown’s attendance is ‘TBD’.
While wildfire safety is undeniably important, the spectacle of some of the region's wealthiest neighborhoods organizing to pursue taxpayer dollars raises questions about priorities in public spending. Many of these same communities have previously opposed tax increases that would benefit schools, public transportation, and affordable housing.
