Courtroom Chaos: Mathew Grimsley, Grant Denton, Eddie Lorton, … Another Strange Day in Washoe County

What a busy day in Department 6 at the Washoe County District Court.

First, the ongoing case involving Mathew Grimsley, the former Karma Box Project worker connected to the Nevada Cares Campus who is facing battery-related allegations.

Now his attorney is reportedly seeking a reduction in bail so Grimsley can get out of jail pending further proceedings.

And that raises a question some observers are beginning to ask:

If Grimsley supposedly lacks the financial resources to post bail, how exactly is he managing to retain what appears to be fairly expensive legal representation?

Maybe there is a perfectly reasonable explanation. Family help. Friends. Payment plans. Pro bono work. Any number of possibilities exist.

But because of Grimsley’s former connection to Karma Box and executive director Grant Denton, some are wondering whether Denton or individuals connected to the organization could somehow be assisting with legal expenses.

To be clear, there is no public evidence proving that. But given the relationships involved, it is a question people are naturally asking.

We still question why Washoe County employs Denton and his Karma Box Project … they should have cut ties after the first employee was arrested, instead they didn’t make a comment until the third employee was arrested … bad form Washoe.

And while tracking that hearing, another familiar political name appeared on the Department 6 calendar: Eddie Lorton.

Yes, that Eddie Lorton — now reportedly involved in litigation connected to Nevada Recycling and disputes involving the children of his late business partner. We ponder if Mayor Hillary Schieve will show up to support her pal Eddie, as she did in Lorton’s battle against Michael Leonard of Mike’s Reno Report, maybe bring him some Spooge Sunscreen.

Only in Washoe County politics does one courtroom calendar start looking like an entire season of local reality television.
