Deadlines, Disposals & Primary Rules: What Washoe Voters Need to Know

Public Notices in the Reno Gazette Journal from Washoe County Government Registrar of Voters.

The Washoe County Registrar of Voters has published legal notices regarding the retention and disposition of 2024 election materials, indicating that such materials may be destroyed on or after May 8, 2026, in accordance with applicable records retention laws.

Voter registration deadlines are as follows: in person, by mail, and through the DMV, registration is scheduled to close on May 12, 2026. Eligible individuals may still register or update party affiliation through same day registration up to and including June 9, 2026 (Primary Election Day). However, any voter who registers or changes party affiliation on Election Day should expect to vote a provisional ballot, which will be counted only after verification of eligibility and registration information, consistent with Nevada law.

Clarification is being sought from election officials regarding whether same day online voter registration is subject to the same provisional ballot requirements.

Voters are encouraged to review and update their registration status in advance of applicable deadlines. Nevada conducts closed party primaries. To vote for a partisan candidate in a primary election, a voter must:

  1. Be a United States citizen;

  2. Be at least 18 years of age on or before Election Day;

  3. Be a resident of the relevant jurisdiction; and

  4. Be registered with the political party whose primary they intend to vote in.

These party affiliation requirements do not apply to nonpartisan races.
