Picon’s Petty Post of the Day: Quorums, Curry, and Common Sense

Eddie Lorton’s post on Facebook after the Diwali - Festival of Lights event on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at the Atlantis.

Since we’re already having a petty day (thank you, City of Reno T-shirt inquiry), let’s move right along to our next question of the week — this one courtesy of four-time Reno mayoral candidate Eddie Lorton.

Eddie took to Facebook recently to raise a “quorum concern” about several Reno City Council members attending the India Association of Northern Nevada,(IANN) event. We’ll give him this — he’s consistent about showing up where cameras and questions are.

But here’s the thing, Eddie — this wasn’t some secret backroom deal or city council meeting in disguise. It was a community celebration hosted by a respected nonprofit that annually invites elected officials. And yes, we know because Picon Press has been there before like last year.

For the record: Multiple council members can legally attend public events like this one as long as they’re not making decisions or deliberating city business. That’s not a loophole — that’s the law.

So maybe let’s not rain on the IANN’s parade or discourage community groups from inviting their elected officials. Not everything that looks like a quorum is a conspiracy — sometimes, it’s just Reno leaders showing up to celebrate our city’s diversity
