Reno’s Vice Mayor Mystery: Rumors and Weather Reports

Who wants to trade mayor and councilmembers? Really, could it be worse?

It’s that time again — Reno City Hall’s annual game of “Who Wants to Be Vice Mayor?” The suspense is thick enough to cut with a council agenda. The November 12th meeting promises interesting ‘deals’ that may have been crafted behind the scenes.

Rumors are flying around town faster than free-range pigs at a county fair. Everyone’s got a theory about who’ll get the title. City Hall watchers are already placing bets on who might emerge as the mayor’s next right-hand. The logic seems simple: who will get the most bang for the buck and that might very well be Mayor Schieve’s ‘bestie’ Councilmember Devon Reese. Heck, she just threw a fundraiser for him at The Elm Estate.

Are they discussing the Reno Vice-Mayor selection on November 12th.

Reese is the mayoral candidate who is part of the “blame it on the weather” explanation of that very loud concert at the J Resort on Halloween. It resulted in 72 complaints to city hall. Seems Reese not only has a legal degree but must have crowned himself a meteorologist. Apparently, sound waves bounce around Reno like pinballs thanks to our uniquely talented atmosphere. Who knew city politics and meteorology were so closely linked?

Picon is amused by the public relations spin that is being put on the weather explanation by folks who work for J Resort and Councilmember Devon Reese.

Seems like those speakers at the J Resort our directed to the West. You can watch this video on YouTube.

Do we need to ask ourselves with the approval by the Reno City Council of the venue and the fact that they caved to get the folks living at The Montage off their backs - by directing the speakers away from their high rise and instead directed the noise to the West, you know people living in neighborhoods, who didn’t move to downtown Reno. Has the Reno City Council committed “Breach of Peace?” You know, every person who shall maliciously and willfully disturb the peace quiet of any neighborhood or person or family by loud or unusual noises, or by tumultuous and offensive conduct, threatening, traducing, quarreling, challenging to fight, or fighting, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. [1911 C&P § 327; RL § 6592; NCL § 10275]—(NRS A 1967, 489; 1971, 150)

A residents comments about the festival grounds and noise levels at the J Resort.

With all this in mind, Picon Press can’t help but dream big — what if we could just trade Reno’s Mayor and Vice-Mayor with another town for a season? Maybe South Lake Tahoe sends us their team, we ship ours over for a sabbatical, and everyone gets a fresh start. Sure the SLT Mayor and Vice-Mayor have had problems, and the mayor stepped down, but really could it really be worse than what we have? Hard to say. But it sure would make for great dais watching, and coming from South Lake Tahoe they know a whole lot about the weather.

Meteorologist & Reno Councilmember Devon Reese points out the loud noise was due to a ‘weather event’ inversion and atmospheric river. The sound engineers told Reese this apparently they too are now weather experts. We suggest you Google ‘inversion and atmospheric river to make sound carry’ it’s interesting and doesn’t quite mess with what is being stated, but we’re not weather experts like the councilmember and sound engineers appear to be.
